Nevertheless, Barfi! was a box-office success, becoming one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2012 in India where it went on to gross 175 crore (US$31.85 million) worldwide and was declared a "Super Hit" after its three week run by Box Office India However, it dropped out of the race in the first round, and was criticised for copying several scenes from English films.
The film was sent as India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film nomination for the 85th Academy Awards in February 2013. The film was praised for showing positive portrayal of the differently abled in films. Basu later announced that he planned an English language version of the film. Made on a budget of 30 crore (US$5.46 million), the film was released on 14 September 2012 across 1300 screens in India. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz in lead roles.

Pre-production of the film started in the second half of 2010, after the script had been completed. The film marks the third collaboration of Kabir Khan with Yash Raj Films after Kabul Express (2006) and New York (2009). It stars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles and Ranvir Shorey, Girish Karnad, Roshan Seth and Gavie Chahal in supporting roles.
